Cat News Friday: Family reunited with cat found 20 miles away

BBC Radio has had a hand in resolving many lost people and animal cases over the years, and this miracle reunion between a cat and her family is no less heartwarming.

On Wednesday morning, little Daisy, the Drever family's cat, was found safe and sound twenty miles away from her home in Orkney. The Drevers had called into BBC Orkney's lost cats radio program last weekend, with the hope that someone would hear their message and report a sighting.

The Muir family had been listing to the program in their hometown of Orphir, twenty miles away from Orkney. They immediately called the Drevers, describing a cat very similar to Daisy who had been visiting their house over the past few days.

To say it was a happy reunion would be an understatement, as you can see from little Robbie Drever's face in the picture!

It is thought that Daisy, being an adventurous little cat, hitched a ride in a truck all the way from Orkney to Orphir. We are sure she is glad to be back from her little vacation!

Tuesday with Taddeo - Rough Encounter with Plant Feed

We all know how teenagers like to rebel. This rule applies in the human world AND in the cat world, it seems.

Taddeo's rebellion comes out in many forms. He chews on Mamma F's flowers, does his doings in the plant soil, performs acrobatic feats on the balcony railing (completely unaware of the 15 foot fall below him), and so on.

The other day, he took a risk that even HE wasn't prepared for!

He drank plant feed.

This is the result. 

Oooo...not feeling so good....

Can't...even...roll...over...

He was out of commission for a good half hour, eyes closed and tummy bear. All of the humans gave him endless belly rubs and attention, with the hope that he would show some signs of improvement. We were all pretty concerned as Taddeo is a cat who never ever stays still, and were actually on the point of taking him to the vet.

If I close my eyes, I can pretend it didn't happen.

Thankfully, he did start to perk up after about an hour of lying as still as a statue on the bench. (Notice big sister Ginger looking at him with an air of superiority. You know, you had your moments when you were a kitten too, Gin Gin!)

We sure hope that he has learned his lesson. Sometimes a risk too far is enough to put a cat back on the straight and narrow!

Caturday Cards - Fluffy Fears Flying and more!

Meow everyone! Fluffy here!

Lots has been going on over here at My Friend Fluffy. Mostly, we've been working on adding weekly features to our blog. (You may have noticed our first Cat News Friday post yesterday!) In addition to this new weekly feature, we have also decided to introduce a day called Caturday Cards! The idea is that, every Saturday, we will post our newest card designs and the story behind them, with the hope of receiving your valued feedback! 

What is more, a random draw will be held from the comments we receive on the first Saturday of every month. The person (or cat!) who's comment is chosen will win a free greeting card of their choice from My Friend Fluffy's online store!

Seeing as today is the first 'Caturday' of September, the very first draw will be held today! (So exciting...mew!) We look forward to receiving your comments and critiques!

I know, I know. A cat who suffers from vertigo is about as paradoxical as a dog who hates belly rubs. But I'm not your average cat! In this card, I am not only quivering at the prospect of the long drop below, but I'm also feeling a little airsick as well. I think I'll sign up for a different job - perhaps in cat-ering, or as a mew-sician?

This birthday card features my buddy Oliver who, with his Atlas-like strength, has lifted a massive fishbowl over his head and caused all the delicious little fishies to fly out of it. I suppose chasing squirrels and birds up trees, and plucking fish out of streams was getting rather unoriginal!

When I got married to my dear cat wife, Molly, Heather drew this purr-fect portrait of us as she threw her bouquet to her three bridesmaids. Don't I look handsome in my top hat and tux? :D

Okay. So, I'm as obsessed with my own reflection as the next cat. However, when my reflected self starts playing Halloween pranks on me, that's where I draw the line! (And that scary jack-o-lantern doesn't help one bit!)

Cat News Friday - Switzerland says OK to execution of cats

Note to readers: This is the first Cat News Friday of hopefully many to come! Our aim is to cover a hot cat related news story and hopefully, spark some discussion. So, without further ado...

If you live in Switzerland, don't allow your cuddly feline companion to roam too far from home. Do so, and a few days later, you might just find yourself filing a lawsuit against your cat's killer. And you wouldn't win. 

In Switzerland, it is perfectly legal to shoot cats, whether they be feral or domestic. A cat that travels more than 180 meters away from its house is, according the Swiss government, a cat that "belongs to no one" and is liable to be targeted. 

In the opinion of the government, reasons to support the shooting of felines are endless. Cats reproduce too many kittens when left free to wander. They spread disease by mating with feral cats. They cover the streets with their excrements. They are a threat to bird, reptiles and other wildlife. The list goes on. 

Not even a petition signed by 13,700 people in June 2011 was enough to convince the government that perhaps, it had crossed the line between practical and barbaric. 

Perhaps supporters of this law don't realise that most cats, when shot, do not instantly die. Many roam for days before passing away due to loss of blood. Those more "fortunate" may survive, but many wind up with mangled limbs. Not even the U.S.A., a country which allows the hunting of wild animals, has been able to eradicate the spread of disease and excessive reproduction among wild cats and dogs. Why should Switzerland have any more success than the United States? 

In Italy, animal protection society 'La Lav's' president Gianluca Felicetti declared that he was "shocked" at Switzerland's decision, and believes that the only way of keeping the animal population under control is through sterilisation and medical treatment. These methods have had great success in Italy - why not in Switzerland? 

Switzerland is so far ahead in technology, education, and human rights, but so far behind in terms of animal rights. Whether the Swiss government itself will come to see the cruelty of its stance towards animlas is yet to be seen.
